Keeping a cleanroom clean while you build
The room gets dirtiest on the days it starts looking finished
Once the envelope is sealed, a cleanroom under construction stops behaving like a jobsite and starts behaving like a container. What gets generated inside it stays inside it. The finishes are going in, the ceiling grid is closing, and the trades producing that debris are still standing in the room that has to pass certification in a few weeks.
Every control below exists for one reason: to keep the people building the room from becoming the room's contamination source. ISO 14644-4:2022 governs design, construction and start-up, and it covers this ground in general terms rather than issuing a control list. Nothing here is quoted from a clause. What follows is industry convention plus what CRM actually enforces on a job, which is the part worth publishing because it is specific.
Nothing enters the clean zone unchecked
Tacky mats go at every entry, without exception for the door people think is temporary. Foot traffic is the most reliable particle delivery system on any site and the mat is the cheapest control on this page.
Material control is the larger half. Every item entering the clean zone is inspected, wiped down and de-cartoned at a staged airlock boundary, not at the point of use. De-cartoning at the boundary is the step crews skip when they are behind schedule, and skipping it is what makes the rest of the protocol decorative: a carton carried to where the part gets installed has already shed its fibres inside the room by the time anyone opens it.
Anything that fails inspection gets marked. Non-conformity marking is what turns an inspection into a control, and the reason is social rather than technical. A mark makes a rejection visible to the next person who handles that item. Unmarked, the same pallet is re-presented at a different door an hour later by somebody who was not there the first time, and it goes in. Marked and logged, it cannot, and the owner has a record of what was refused and why.
What does not come through the door
Some materials are refused outright. Each refusal carries a reason a crew can repeat back, because a rule nobody understands is a rule that gets worked around the first time it is inconvenient.
- Cardboard, which sheds cellulose fibre continuously and sheds more every time it is lifted, opened or torn
- Wood, for the same shedding reason, plus the dust any cut or trim produces
- Paper, including notebooks, printed drawings and packaging inserts; cleanroom-grade paper is the substitute and it exists precisely because ordinary paper does not belong here
- Graphite pencils, which leave a fine dark dust across every surface under the writing hand and on the hand itself
- Non-approved adhesives, tapes and sealants, which leave residue and outgas into a space that is being sealed rather than ventilated
- Personal items, including jewelry, cosmetics and fragrance, all of which shed or aerosolize and none of which the work requires
Cutting and grinding is the other half of the same rule. Any operation that makes chips, filings or dust moves outside the zone. Where a cut genuinely has to happen in place, it happens with local capture at the tool, so the debris is collected where it is made rather than after it has travelled. An unsupported cut puts its full output straight into air the sealed room is now holding.
Housekeeping happens every day the zone is occupied
HEPA vacuuming and debris removal run daily, on the days that feel too busy for it as much as on the quiet ones. Debris left overnight does not stay where it landed; it gets walked, kicked and blown into places the next crew will disturb.
Dry sweeping is the thing that does not happen, and it is worth naming out loud because it is the reflex everywhere else on a construction site. A broom does not remove particles from a room, it relocates them: settled debris goes airborne, travels on the air the temporary system is moving, and lands somewhere nobody is looking. A HEPA vacuum captures at the head and holds what it picks up. The distinction is the same one that separates a trained cleanroom crew from a general cleanup, and it is the reason the two are not interchangeable at any point in the build.
Air control starts before the room is finished
Temporary filtration and positive pressure are established as early as the air system allows, rather than waiting for final filters and balancing. Roughing filters on a partially commissioned system will not classify anything, and that is not what they are for.
What early air control buys is direction. A zone held above the pressure of the spaces around it pushes air out through every gap and every door opening instead of pulling the corridor in, so the boundary works even while it is still full of penetrations. It also gives the room a way to clear what the day's work put into it, which means the next morning starts from a lower baseline instead of accumulating for the length of the build.
Badges are how the training requirement becomes real
Nobody receives a badge before the classroom time. Trades who have never worked in a clean zone have no reason to know why cardboard is a problem or why a pencil is worse than a pen, and the education is delivered by field-experienced presenters and customized to the client's own materials and priorities. That customization is the useful part: a prohibited-materials list is only worth reading aloud if it names the things this particular crew is actually carrying through the door.
The badge is what converts that education into something enforceable. CRM keeps the log of approved badges, issues new ones, monitors their use, and can manufacture them. Without a log, "only trained personnel enter the clean zone" is a sentence in a specification. With one, entry becomes a fact somebody can produce on demand: who was trained, when they were trained, and who was inside the zone on any given day. When a count spikes and nobody can say who was in the room, the count is an anomaly. When the badge log answers that question, the same count is a lead.
Daily counts are a diagnostic, not a certificate
Multi-point particle counts run daily through the clean-build phases, with results back to the owner and the general contractor the same day rather than at the end of the week.
Be precise about what those counts are. They are a diagnostic. They tell you which trade, which activity or which entry is loading the room on the day it happens, while the schedule still has room to do something about it. They are not compliance monitoring, they are not a classification, and no certificate is issued from them. The room's classification comes later, from the certification battery run after final filters are installed and the top/down superclean is complete.
Read the shape of the data rather than any single number:

Counts also settle arguments cheaply. A trade whose activity is loading the room tends to hear it as an accusation until the data is on the table, at which point it becomes a scheduling problem with an obvious fix: do that work earlier, do it outside the zone, or do it with capture.
