The top/down supercleaning checklist

The short answer
A top-down superclean is a full reset, not a routine clean. The room comes out of service and a cleanroom is deep cleaned top to bottom in one pass: ceiling grid and filter faces, walls and glazing, fixtures, equipment exteriors, under and behind, floors last. Highest to lowest, cleanest to dirtiest. It runs before certification, not after.

What a top-down superclean is, and what it is not

A top-down superclean is an event, not a routine. It takes a room out of service and resets every surface in it to a known baseline, including the surfaces a daily or weekly program never touches: the ceiling grid and the faces of the filters, the tops of light fixtures and ducting, the backs and undersides of equipment, and the joints where a wall meets a floor. An ongoing maintenance regimen does the opposite job. It holds a room at the baseline a superclean established, on a defined frequency, worked around production rather than instead of it.

Facilities buy the two for different reasons, and they are scoped, scheduled and priced as different services. The contrast below is the one worth having in mind when a room is behaving badly and nobody has yet said which of the two is being asked for.

The governing document for both is IEST-RP-CC018.6, Cleanroom Cleaning and Sanitization: Operating and Monitoring Procedures, published April 2026. It is the recommended practice to ask a cleaning vendor about by name, and the revision number is worth carrying in the question, because the 2026 edition expanded its background material on residue, coverage rates and bucket change frequencies. A vendor still citing the housekeeping title the document carried before that revision is telling you something about how recently they read it.

How a cleanroom is deep cleaned top to bottom, and why the order runs that way

Because of gravity. Anything a wiper, a vacuum or a gloved hand disturbs on a high surface does not leave the room; it settles onto the surfaces beneath it. Clean the floor first and you have guaranteed that you will re-contaminate it the moment someone reaches the ceiling grid. Working downward means every stage cleans up after the stage above it, and the floor, which carries the heaviest load and is the surface nobody wants to do twice, is cleaned once and stays clean.

A second ordering rule runs alongside the first and is the one most often lost under time pressure: work from the cleanest area toward the least clean. Direction of travel is itself a contamination control, because carrying a heavier load into an area that was already at spec undoes work that was already finished. Applied together, the two rules give a single path through the room: highest to lowest, cleanest to dirtiest, ending at the door you intend to leave by.

Ordering is what this article owns. How an individual stroke is made, which face of the wiper meets the surface, how wet that wiper is, and how often a bucket or a mop head is changed are a separate discipline, and getting them wrong moves contamination around instead of removing it, which is the subject of cleaning a cleanroom without relocating particles.

The sequence, ceiling grid to floor

  1. Ceiling grid and filter faces. The highest surfaces in the room and the ones a routine clean never reaches, so they carry the oldest accumulation.
  2. Ceiling-mounted fixtures, ducting, sprinkler heads and exposed services. The upper face of a light fixture is a shelf, and it is treated as one.
  3. Walls, worked from the top course down, with glazing and view panels taken in the same pass.
  4. Door frames, handles, pass-throughs and interlocks. High-touch surfaces carry a bioburden that the wall beside them does not.
  5. Equipment exteriors, each item worked top to bottom, and the items themselves worked cleanest to dirtiest across the room.
  6. Under and behind. Equipment legs, cable runs, the backs of benches, the undersides of shelving. This is the step a rushed superclean drops, and it is where a genuine excursion source is most often found.
  7. Coving, wall to floor joints, and floor drains where the room has them.
  8. Floors, last, in one continuous path that ends at the exit.

The room is then closed and allowed to settle before anything is measured. Cleaning is itself a particle-generating activity, so a count taken while the room is still recovering measures the cleaning rather than the room.

Why the superclean comes before certification

Certify a room you have not supercleaned and you are testing your housekeeping, not your air handling. The certification battery measures what is in the air and what the filters, the airflow and the pressure regime are doing about it. A surface load that a superclean would have removed reports into those counts as though it were a filtration or an airflow problem, which sends the investigation into the mechanical system when the answer was sitting on top of a duct.

In new construction the order is explicit and worth copying into any remediation plan: final filters are installed, the top-down superclean is run, and only then does commissioning, balancing and the certification battery follow. The results of that battery become the as-built baseline, and a baseline recorded on an uncleaned room is a number the facility will spend the next year arguing with.

How often that battery is repeated afterward, and what forces it early, is a separate question answered in how often a cleanroom should be certified.

When a superclean is run

  • Before initial certification, so that the baseline the certificate records is the room and not its construction backlog.
  • After construction or renovation, once final filters are in and before commissioning begins.
  • After a contamination event or an excursion, as the reset that a corrective action plan is built on rather than as the corrective action itself.
  • On a periodic cycle set by risk assessment. Quarterly, semi-annual and annual cycles are all common in practice.
  • Before a major audit or a customer qualification visit, where the surfaces an auditor reaches for are exactly the ones a routine program does not.
  • On repurposing, when a room changes product, process or classification, and the previous occupant's residue is the first thing the new process will find.

None of that is a frequency requirement. The two-tier model, a periodic reset plus a regimen that holds it, is industry convention rather than a clause anybody can cite, and the interval belongs in a documented risk assessment written against what the room actually makes.

Top-down superclean questions

In practice yes, and that is what separates it from a maintenance visit. A superclean reaches the ceiling grid, the filter faces, the tops of fixtures and the space under and behind equipment, none of which can be worked safely or thoroughly with a process running. It is normally scheduled overnight, on a weekend, or into a planned shutdown, and the room is left to settle afterward before anything is measured.
